Work

Work where the work talks back

Running a 34-bed hostel on East 6th is hospitality at its most human. Here’s what that means, and what’s open now.

The honest pitch

You will learn everyone’s name. You will give the same taco-truck directions with fresh enthusiasm. In exchange: above-median pay, schedules posted three weeks out, and a Sunday staff breakfast you’ll think about for years.

We hire for warmth first and train everything else. Hospitality experience helps; hospitality burnout helps more.

What we’re hiring for

Front desk and house host · full-time · $20/hr plus tips

The face of the house: check-ins, the chalkboard, the coffee pot, the phone. You’ll know the week’s East 6th lineup cold. Two years of customer-facing work of any kind, and Austin residency or deep familiarity.

Shifts run 7am to 3pm or 3 to 11pm on a fixed weekly schedule. Health stipend after 90 days, paid time off from day one, and one free stay a year to give away. Email [email protected] with the subject “House Host” and tell us about a stranger you helped.

Housekeeping lead · part-time · $19/hr

Thirty-four beds turned daily to a standard we’re proud of, plus the kitchen and baths. You set the morning pace and the playlist.

Roughly 22 hours a week, mornings, more in festival season with festival pay to match. Email [email protected] with the subject “Housekeeping”.

Work exchange · spring and fall

Twice a year we take two work-exchange travelers: 15 hours a week of housekeeping and yard duty for a bunk, kitchen privileges, and the run of the city. Minimum stay six weeks.

This is a real arrangement with real expectations, and we send the full terms before you commit. Email [email protected] with the subject “Work exchange” and your rough dates.

How we treat the crew

  • Pay above the Austin hospitality median, reviewed every January
  • Schedules posted three weeks ahead, no clopening
  • Paid time off from day one, health stipend after 90 days
  • The house closes one week each September, and that week is paid
  • Sunday staff breakfast; the cast-iron is communal
