A neighborhood that still makes things.
Warehouses, coffee, the river path, and a MAX stop you can walk to. 831 SE 3rd is between Belmont and Morrison, one block off the Willamette — not a “district experience,” a street with trucks on it.

Dana’s night staff still hand-copies these onto the desk card. Times assume a normal Portland pace, not a race.
West to the river. Dawn is quieter. The Steel Bridge lower deck is the long way into downtown if you want the water the whole time.
North on 3rd. Heart Coffee at 2211 E Burnside is twelve minutes; stools are gone by 8:45 on weekdays.
South past Hawthorne. Kachka (960 SE 11th) is closer to eighteen. Pelmeni nights run late; the desk keeps the current card.
South on 3rd, then Water. The USS Blueback is the landmark. Orange Line at OMSI/SE Water is eight minutes if you would rather ride than walk the last stretch.
738 E Burnside. Book them yourself. We will not hold a Cinder table and a Pigeon table for the same Saturday without you asking twice.
The old Washington High. Shows let out onto SE Stark; the walk back is well lit until the last warehouse block. Call the desk if you want a cab number that actually answers.
What the street actually is
Trucks in the morning. Bars after eleven.
Central Eastside is still zoned for making things. You will hear a forklift at 7am and a band loading out at 12:40. The foundry sat empty from 1988 to 2014 in part because this was not a postcard neighborhood. It still is not. That is the point of staying here instead of on the Park Blocks.
SE 3rd between Belmont and Morrison is one-way in practice even when the signs argue. The hotel lot is on 3rd, $18 a night, gated after 10. Street parking is the city’s problem, not ours; we will not pretend otherwise.

Heart Roasters, East Burnside — twelve minutes. Coava on 10th is farther and better for a laptop. We pour Heart in the lobby from 6:30. Do not expect a cortado ballet at the desk.
Dinner we are dark
Monday and Tuesday The Charge is closed. Le Pigeon for the occasion, Kachka for pelmeni, a booth at Tusk if you want vegetables that were not an afterthought. The desk will say which of those actually has a table.
River
Eastbank Esplanade at dawn. The bridges look better then, and you will share them with rowers instead of rental scooters. OMSI’s lawn is fine in July and a wind tunnel in January.
Train
MAX Orange Line, OMSI/SE Water — eight minutes on foot. Skip the car unless you are leaving the city. The lot is $18 a night if you brought one anyway.
Night
The district still pours after 11. Ask the desk for rooms that are not on the apps. We keep a card. We will not send you to a place that stiffed a cook last month.
Walk it once. Then decide if you need a car.
Most guests do not. The Orange Line, the Esplanade, and a pair of decent shoes cover the useful radius. If you drove, the lot on SE 3rd is $18 and we will badge you at the desk.
